Private Credit from Corporate Banking?

Hey y’all,

Ignore position title. I am currently a creditor underwriting for large corporations (working with the IB team) in a strong coverage group at a large BB. My long term goal is to break into private credit. I heard it is extremely difficult to make it into PC from being a simple underwriter, even if it is for the IB team. However, I heard it is possible from corporate banking. Does anyone have any color they can provide on my current position? Is it possible to move over in the future from my current role or do I have to do CB or IB first? Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your situation:

  1. Transition from Corporate Banking to Private Credit:

    • It is indeed possible to move from Corporate Banking (CB) to Private Credit (PC). While it might be challenging, it is not unheard of. Your experience in underwriting for large corporations and working with the IB team can be valuable.
  2. Current Role and Future Moves:

    • Your current role as a creditor underwriting for large corporations, especially in a strong coverage group at a large BB, positions you well for a future move. The skills and experience you gain here can be leveraged when transitioning to Private Credit.
    • Direct promotions and lateral moves within the bank are possible, especially if you perform well and have senior support. This is highlighted in the context where it mentions that lateraling to IB from CB is feasible if you have been cross-staffed with IB on deals.
  3. Considerations for Moving to Private Credit:

    • Networking and building relationships within your current bank and the broader industry can significantly enhance your chances of making the move.
    • Demonstrating your ability to handle complex deals and showcasing your understanding of credit markets will be crucial.
  4. Alternative Pathways:

    • If a direct move from your current role to Private Credit seems challenging, consider transitioning to a role in Corporate Banking or Investment Banking first. This can provide you with additional relevant experience and make the move to Private Credit smoother.

In summary, while it might be challenging to move directly from an underwriting role to Private Credit, leveraging your current experience, networking, and possibly transitioning through CB or IB can enhance your chances.
