Private Credit Summer Analyst Exits

What's good guys, I'm incoming at a large credit fund this summer (Blue Owl/HPS/6th Street/Fortress) and was wondering what exits would look like in my situation. I was hesitant to pursue this over banking roles, but ultimately decided the position was more interesting to me. Assuming I don't receive a RO, has anyone heard of popular exists for someone in my situation?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, private credit summer analyst roles at large funds like Blue Owl, HPS, 6th Street, or Fortress can lead to strong exit opportunities. Here are some common paths:

  1. Other Credit-Related Roles: Many analysts transition to private credit, public credit, distressed investing, mezzanine financing, or leveraged finance roles at banks.

  2. Hedge Funds: Credit-focused hedge funds, particularly those specializing in distressed debt or multi-strategy credit, are a natural progression.

  3. Private Equity: While less common than banking-to-PE transitions, networking and showcasing your deal experience can help you land roles at smaller equity funds or even larger PE firms.

  4. MBA Programs: Top-tier MBA programs are a frequent next step, especially if you're looking to pivot or enhance your career trajectory.

  5. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) or Real Estate Private Equity (REPE): If your credit fund exposure includes real estate, this can be a viable exit.

  6. Corporate Development or Strategy Roles: Some analysts leverage their credit experience to move into corporate roles, particularly in industries they’ve covered.

  7. Staying in Private Credit: Many analysts choose to stay within private credit, either at their current firm (if offered a return) or by lateraling to another fund.

Your decision to prioritize interest over banking roles is valid, and these exits demonstrate the flexibility of private credit experience. Networking and leveraging your summer experience will be key to securing these opportunities.

  1. Another credit fund
    2. Another credit fund but downmarket (I.e. MM or LMM)
    3. Assuming this is direct lending something adjacent like secondaries, ABL, mezz, etc.
    4. Back to banking
