Take Home Credit Case Studies

Gents - I have a 3 day take home I need to do over the course of the next weekend.

Could I get some advice on how to structure my arguments? How did you guys do to get that PC ASO role? I can model just fine, just need some perspectives. I looked around on WSO for a bit but couldn’t really find that much info.

All info appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and advice for structuring your arguments and preparing for your take-home credit case study:

  1. Logical Structure:

    • Issue Tree: Create a logical, structured approach by identifying key topics to review. Draw out an issue tree to break down the problem into smaller, manageable parts.
    • Contextualization: Ensure your key topics are relevant to the case facts. For example, if the client is concerned about a new competitor, explain why understanding the competitor's market entry is crucial.
  2. Framework Development:

    • Case in Point: Use resources like "Case in Point" to draft frameworks. Read the question, draft your framework without looking at the solution, and then compare to identify gaps.
    • Supplementary Resources: Supplement "Case in Point" with other resources to master MBB case interviews. Practice developing frameworks and identifying elements you typically miss.
  3. Practice and Feedback:

    • Case Partners: Find case partners from friends, consulting clubs, or organized channels. Practice reading prompts, asking clarifying questions, and laying out frameworks.
    • Feedback Loop: After practicing, get feedback on your frameworks and refine your approach. Make mental notes of common elements you miss and incorporate them in future cases.
  4. Professional Development:

    • Regular Check-ins: Set up regular check-ins with your supervisor to ensure you are on track. Ask for suggestions for improvement and next steps.
    • Defending Opinions: Be prepared to defend your opinions with data but also be flexible to office politics and client management.
  5. Resources:

    • Victor Cheng's Book: Read through Victor Cheng's book for good framework branches and structuring communication.
    • University Case Books: Access free university case books for a variety of cases to practice.
  6. Case Competition Tips:

    • Concepts to Study: Focus on high-level areas to brainstorm around and common questions. Customize frameworks for each case.
    • In-depth Look: Use resources like "Case Interview Secrets" for a deeper understanding of the consulting mindset and structuring frameworks from scratch.

By following these structured approaches and utilizing the recommended resources, you can effectively prepare for your take-home credit case study and improve your chances of securing the PC ASO role.

Every section should tie into your thesis. For example, you're looking at a stressed name and your thesis is that they won't make their upcoming mtys for XYZ reasons so you like the bonds as a short. Your business description section should describe what they do but also show how they are declining - why they're declining... maybe it's a secular or cyclical decline and how that impacts financials liquidity instead of just here is what XYZ business does. Valuation - show how earnings are declining and therefore it's an over-levered business at the new normalized number, so not only does the create looks expensive but also it'll be difficult to refi/get new money unless it's XYZ paper which won't work maybe due to covenants/unsustainable cap structure (this also makes a stronger case for a short).

So instead of looking at each section in a vacuum, tie each section to your thesis. Each section should be an argument for your thesis vs just providing blanket information to the reader.
