What would you guys who are experienced in crypto suggest to build a knowledge base to start assessing interesting opportunities in the small cap space?Reading The Bitcoin Standard currently and read white papers on BTC, ETH, LRC & DOT.

It may be 165 pages but it's such an easy read. Really good report.
Crypto Twitter. Follow all the top guys and a couple more to catch new trends.
Any suggestions of accounts to follow?
Start with Saylor, Pomp, Cobie, Winklevoss twins, SBF, Jack and then follow suggestions.
The best advice I can give is to stay away from anyone who focuses solely on price when they talk about crypto. There are a lot of youtube channels out there dedicated to crypto and it can be difficult to wade through the garbage at times. Most of the trash channels will just focus on technicals and trends and tell you why this coin or that coin is going to the moon, but the reality is most of them have no idea what they are talking about. Learn about the project itself that the token supports. You're already reading white papers so you're already on the right track. While reading white papers I always like to have the thought in the back of my mind "is there a real world use case here, is this something that will actually solve a problem or fill a gap in a market?"
I use this channel as a resource to get a general overview of a project before delving in the the white paper and deeper dive diligence. He doesn't cover every project out there as there are thousands but has a lot of content to cover a lot of the major and up and coming projects. Learn about tokenomics, channel below covers it as well.

ditto, I have a friend that made a great amount last year, but he just does technical analysis and really was just lucky at the end of the day. He's made a lot of calls that were wrong, so really it's anyone's guess. Despite being an otherwise smart dude, he doesn't know the first thing about economics or actual forex mechanics as they relate to crypto. I don't pretend to know much about it, but it just sounds cringe to me whenever he says anything about it. Am I butthurt? Yes, but at least I can get better risk-adjusted returns and not freak out 24/7 like he does.
If anyone wants to learn how to build apps on crypto platforms (mostly ETH) then Nader Dabit is a great resource on YouTube
Whiteboard crypto and coin bureau are two really great YouTube channels
"Bitcoin for Dummies," Prypto Company. Even though this book came out quite recently, it has already become a bestseller because it answers beginners' questions: What is bitcoin? Where can I get and how can I store this cryptocurrency?
I get the most information in popular telegram channels, It's very convenient!
