Being more efficient at my job?

Currently a new associate on an Equity Research desk at a BB. I’m wanted to ask more experienced folk how you became efficient at your job / stuff you wish you knew earlier.

Any advice?

Absolutely, I'd be happy to share some advice on becoming more efficient at your job, especially in a demanding field like Equity Research at a BB. Here are a few tips:

  1. Focus on the Task at Hand: It's easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work you have to do. Instead of fretting about all the tasks you haven't accomplished, focus on the immediate task at hand. Set small, clear, achievable goals throughout the day and tackle them one at a time. You might be surprised at how much you can accomplish this way.

  2. Take Responsibility for Your Work: Whatever your focus is, whether it's covering a bunch of companies, clients, or overseeing a project, take total responsibility for your work. Care for the outcome of your domain. This sense of ownership can drive you to work more efficiently and effectively.

  3. Think Critically About Your Daily Schedule: Where are you wasting time? Are there any things that you can cut out? Is there daily time-consuming work that is not deal-related? Are there other ways that you can be more efficient in completing your work product? A critical evaluation of your daily routine can reveal areas where you can save time and increase productivity.

  4. Leverage Resources: If you're consistently working long hours, consider talking to your staffer. Are all of the other analysts in your group working the same hours? Can you leverage resources from other groups or cross-staffed deal teams? Don't hesitate to seek help when you need it.

Remember, efficiency often comes with experience and practice. So, don't be too hard on yourself. Keep learning, stay focused, and you'll get there!
