Equity Research Data Scientist Advice

Hi everyone,

I am currently a data scientist working at a BB. I work with equity researchers to solve their investment hypothesis by analyzing alternative data. I am completing a part time Master of Stats at the moment from a top 10 graduate school program in Statistics. I will be taking a pair of econometrics classes for my electives. I’m looking for some advice on where to go in my career.

I’m not located where all the equity researchers are so I find it hard to develop relationships with them and learn about the Industry. Because I don’t work in the same office as them, it just feels like I’m getting handed work and can’t progress much in my career. I’m in the “technology” group and not actually in equity research so my total comp isn’t great however I only do work 40 hours a week.

I heard at other firms, data scientists are in the same team as equity researchers but doing different work of course. This means that they are working similar hours and have a similar comp. Can any elaborate on this with specific job titles/companies?

I could try to take internal mobility into the ER group and leverage my quantitative background.

Another possibility would be switching into a data science/quant role at a hedge fund.

Lastly, I’ve been reading about equity strategy and how it’s an area of equity research that’s more data driven. This could be a possibility as well.

I would appreciate any advice or comments, thank you!
