ER Interview Process

All--

Wanted to get some advice regarding the interview process for MM ER. Do the interviewers place more emphasis on broader industry knowledge or knowledge of the specific companies they cover? Is more emphasis placed on writing skills or fundamental finance/modeling knowledge? Both are obviously important, but is greater emphasis placed on one over the other? I'll continue to search the forum, but any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has a model and/or writing sample that would replicate what is used in an interview setting, it would be a great help. Thanks in advance!

I've found there's a heavier weighting on fundamental finance and modeling knowledge. It's a skill set that allows you to be plugged into a platform to grind out repetitive work at the lowest level. Everything else is incrementally positive, but the broader your skillset the more likely you are to land the job. I've found that interviewers generally care about technical stuff first, and writing abilities second. These are just my impressions. They're nearly identically important in practice, and I could be interviewing at the wrong shops. : P

Hi,

As an ER associate, I can tell you that 70% of your time will be spent writing. Modeling will either entail updating or building a model off some template when initiating coverage. I agree that analysts want to make sure you can model and dissect a financial statement/PR but if you have no writing skills, you're as good as useless.
