ER vs S&T personality
There have been many posts about IB vs S&T personality, but not many about the ER side. Only generalization I've heard about ER is that they are more on th introverted side (not saying they are socially awkward) and that S&T is more of the extrovered side and have more "hunger" (coming from a more non trad background than typical IB).
Here are my categories:
“The Target School Clueless”
They went to a top 20 college and recruited for research because they had no idea what to do in life and banks actually came on campus. Once they realize that research is BS, some of them will voluntarily jump into the hellhole called investment banking, thinking they will do more meaningful work.
“Hardos”
They are truly passionate about the unique aspects of Wall Street research: brainstorming for note titles, event-planning for a conference, and kissing serious butts. They are committed to become a Research Analyst just so they get to say “congrats on a great quarter” on every single earnings call.
“Closet Buy-siders”
They settled for sell-side with the explicit goal of lateraling into the buy-side. They zone out during any event-planning / marketing-related activities but will take meticulous notes when a respected investor calls their boss for stock debates. They will also say “yes” without blinking when a respected client hooks them up with a buy-side job.
“Corporate Exiters”
They have been grinding on the sell-side for a long time and are just one phone call away from exiting to a company they cover for a much better work-life balance but more politics and useless meetings.
“Lifers”
They are a career VP / associate on the sell-side who do not want the responsibilities of an Analyst but are very competent in supporting a good boss who treats them right. Unlike hardos, lifers will not put in 100% effort but will do the job just fine and care enough to maintain the franchise so that they won’t get fired.
