ER:Top ranked but toxic team at a small shop VS Mediocre team at BB?

Hi -currently at a ER team at a small shop. Sector is good, analyst is strong but the culture is toxic. Recently got an offer from a BB. Pay is a lot higher but management does not care much about this sector, lead analyst is very new. I have been thinking about if I should stay, adjust myself to the toxic culture and get out after 3 years (on a H1B visa so couldn’t move), or should I just go to BB, and then think about exit after 3 years.

The BB team is unlikely to place me into a buyside, but current team has track record to place ppl into HF, only if you go through all the process. But BB brand name is really strong on my resume.

Have asked friends on this, and get to a conclusion is that it all depends on what I want. I don’t want to go to HF (stress and layoff etc) and prefer to stay at SS or explore some other options.

Appreciate any thoughts!!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you might approach this decision:

  1. Toxic Culture vs. Career Longevity:

    • If the toxic culture at your current small shop is unbearable and affecting your mental health or productivity, it might not be worth staying, even with the strong track record of placing people into hedge funds. Toxic environments can lead to burnout, which could hinder your long-term career prospects.
    • On the other hand, if you can tolerate the culture for a few years and leverage the strong sector and analyst reputation, it could set you up for better exit opportunities, especially since you’re not aiming for the buy-side.
  2. BB Brand Name and Pay:

    • The BB offer provides a significant pay bump and a strong brand name on your resume, which can open doors in the future. However, the lack of focus on your sector and a new lead analyst might limit your learning and growth opportunities. If the BB team doesn’t have a strong track record of placing people into desirable roles, this could be a drawback.
  3. Your Long-Term Goals:

    • Since you’re not interested in hedge funds and prefer to stay on the sell-side or explore other options, the BB brand name might carry more weight for your future career moves. It could make transitioning to other sell-side roles or even corporate roles easier.
  4. Visa Considerations:

    • Being on an H1B visa adds complexity. Stability and sponsorship are critical, so ensure that whichever option you choose aligns with your visa requirements and long-term security.

Recommendation:

  • If you believe you can endure the toxic culture for a few years and leverage the strong sector and analyst reputation for better sell-side opportunities, staying at the small shop might be worth it. However, this is contingent on your ability to manage the toxicity without it negatively impacting your well-being.
  • If the toxic culture is too much to handle or you value the BB brand name and higher pay for future flexibility, the BB offer could be the better choice, even if the team isn’t ideal.

Ultimately, it depends on your tolerance for the current environment and how much you value the BB brand for your long-term goals.

If it's my ass, nothing is worth 3 years of toxicity and I'm getting out of there fast for the middling BB team.

And can it ever be?

Thanks! I have been with the team for a couple of months, almost adjusted myself. It’s a small shop although well known. Do you think worth going to BB, boosting my resume as I am open for other options in the future (not desperately want to go to HF)?

It's worth going nearly anywhere else IMO. If the BB is a reasonably good spot to land in, and you don't have any reservations about going there, then go!

And can it ever be?
