Fresh from school

Hi everyone,

I've been following the forums for a while since I've been in school. Now that I've graduated, Ive got a question about a job in equity research. What is it like working in a private bank doing ER? How different is it from ER in a BB?

Would it be a good starting point for a career as an equity research analyst?

Any input is deeply appreciated

Regards

ER at a BB is effectively pumping the stock for underwriting clients. So writing bullish reports on stocks using whatever argument you can come up with. It's a great experience and you learn a fair bit about an industry (and others from your coworkers if you are so inclined) and get good connections. It's a nice way to get your name out there and maybe jump to the buy side.

The PB ER is probably which stocks to buy, which, given the risk profiles of most private banks, would look like working for a mutual fund or asset management firm. Looking for stocks to buy for the relatively long-haul and suggesting them to a PM. It's half of what I do, it's nice. I find buyside ER a bit more stressful from talking with the guys on the other end of the line. Ultimately, I'm judged by market performance at some level, sell-side ER is judged on readership and generating interest in the research provider/stock. Payout is probably a bit safer sell-side.

Thanks FinancePun.

That was rather helpful. However if I were to ask which side would have better growth prospects am i correct to say its sell-side since you would build better connections? Seems to me that you're effectively trying to sell ideas that you may not agree with in sell-side? On the otherhand, to me like theres more flexibility and chances to showcase real ideas in buy side. correct me if Im wrong.

Once again thanks for the quick reply.
