How much influence can you have on the ER team you're placed in?

From reading this forum, it's pretty clear that it is extremely important to work for a well ranked analyst. However, I know that for many of the summer internship programmes at BB banks in London, you are randomly assigned to a team with head count and after your internship, you may be moved to another team.

Is there much you can do to influence which team you are placed in or at least find out which teams have spots?

Which teams have headcount capacity? Just ask HR/your direct 'future' supervisor. It is a legit question and no one is going to hit you on the head for doing so. If anything, he/she will probably commend you that you're curious and thinking ahead (assuming you received the FT return offer).

Is there much you can do to influence which team you are placed in? Usually it's very much driven by business needs, but if you're a great candidate they (HR/teams) will obviously take in to account your preferences (although you should not have an overly firm stance on any particular sector I'd say as you don't want to show the other potential teams that you have no interest in them).

I would say the best thing you can do is talk with the people from the specific teams you're interested in about sector-specific matters and show them that you're clued up on what's happening in the space and hint that you would be very interested in working with them (Associates/Analyst) on the team. That way, they themselves may approach HR and express an interest to have you on the team.
