How to network yourself into a specific sector (Medtech)

Hello,

I have been trying to break into ER for some time now with minimal networking, to no avail. I know that networking is the golden rule around here but I am a bit unsure of how to do it for ER, where interest in a certain sector is quite important. I am personally interested in Medtech and have a few pitches that I want to send out with my applications, but as I search linkedin I cannot find a good number of analysts in my area. I live in cali and have been looking at LA/SF offices, but it seems that most of them are in NY. Does everyone networking target NY analysts for their sectors or mostly go wherever their alumni network takes them. Also, what's a good source for finding analysts besides ER reports and some paid-for terminals?
