Industry->ER, ER->Industry, MBA->ER, ER->MBA
I am trying to learn more about ER from this forum, so please laugh at it if my questions are too basic...
Is equity research a job after or pre MBA? Or it is like consulting that has different salary level for undergrad school and grad school?
I saw some ppl ask about switching from industry to ER, some reverse, why is that?
Thanks!

ER has pre and post MBA positions. MBA positions generally pay more.
ER jobs generally are sector focused. It helps a lot to understand the technology or nuances of the industry you are covering, so experience in the industry tends to be one of the ways to get into ER. Also, industry contacts are useful data points, so that adds to the value of someone with an industry background. People tend to go from industry to ER when they are still relatively early on in their career.
On the other hand, ER professionals tend to spend a lot of time communicating with the management teams of companies under coverage and in their coverage sector, while building a tremendous understanding of an industry. So, ER can sometimes leverage those relationships and knowledge to land a job that makes use of the industry expertise in a company they used to cover. When ER lands in industry, it is often at a more senior level and pay grade than someone coming to ER from industry.
