Do you need to graduate early? Can you stick around an extra semester and recruit for next summer? It's a numbers game and you'll need to start firing out applications, continue networking, and ask your previous spot for referrals if you see job openings that they might have connections to.
Thank you for the response. I finish the last couple required classes this semester, and I’d prefer not to stay (from a financial perspective), but I’ve also heard a lot of jobs open up in Spring usually.
See if you can get an off cycle internship until the spring so you can stay busy and show that you're continuing to develop your skills.
I will try that. Is it okay if it is not in research? I’m planning on casting a pretty wide net.
This happened to me last summer at a large MM IB (Jeff, Gugg, HL, etc.) and to be totally candid with you it was a blood bath recruiting FT without a return.
Whether it was headcount or not, I would say that was the reason. I eventually did land another IB job but it’s at a small boutique IB and hoping to lateral to a larger bank soon. As long as your explanation for why you didn’t get one sounds credible, people will not usually ask follow ups about it or go out of their way to independently verify the reason but I would say you have someone who is willing to vouch for you at the bank.
I knew IB was what I always wanted to do so I didn’t really look for any other jobs and just keep applying and networking til somebody finally said yes. Keep your head up and something will eventually land.
Thank you! I’m going through right now and working on a new stock pitch and model that I’m going to send out while I network
As someone in a similar position, it is what it is and you need to keep grinding.
