IB SA -> ER FT

I did my summer in IB and honestly really disliked it and didn't receive a return. I've been extremely interested in ER space after learning more about HFs and such, and IB isn't necessarily a pre-requisite to get there.

I'm curious if this switch is common/doable, when ER apps typically open, and what timelines are for the FT process? I'd imagine it operates in an ad hoc way such as IB FT, but I'd love to get more insight as someone without much knowledge on how recruiting works here.

Switching from an IB Summer Analyst (SA) role to Equity Research (ER) for full-time is definitely doable, and it's not uncommon for individuals to make this transition. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

1. Feasibility of the Switch

  • Switching from IB to ER: Many have successfully transitioned from IB to ER, especially if they have strong writing skills and a genuine interest in research. ER analysts often value candidates with IB experience because of their financial modeling and valuation skills.
  • No IB Return Offer: Not having a return offer from IB doesn’t necessarily hurt your chances in ER, as the skill sets overlap but are not identical. Demonstrating your passion for ER and knowledge of the space will be key.

2. ER Recruiting Timelines

  • Ad Hoc Nature: Similar to IB full-time recruiting, ER recruiting often operates on an ad hoc basis. Openings can pop up throughout the year, depending on team needs and turnover.
  • OCR and Final Rounds: Some firms, like MFS and Wellington Management, have structured recruiting timelines with on-campus recruiting (OCR) in early September and final rounds in late October. Others, like SIG and BlackRock, may have specific programs with defined timelines (e.g., late September for applications).
  • Networking: Since ER recruiting can be less structured, networking is crucial. Reach out to ER professionals, express your interest, and stay updated on openings.

3. How to Prepare

  • Tailor Your Story: Highlight your interest in ER, your analytical skills, and how your IB experience has prepared you for the role. Be ready to explain why ER aligns better with your career goals.
  • Research Firms: Focus on firms with active ER programs, such as BlackRock, PIMCO, Eaton Vance, and Guggenheim. These firms often have rotational or associate programs.
  • Skill Development: Brush up on writing research reports, understanding industry trends, and building detailed financial models. These are critical skills for ER roles.

4. Key Takeaways

  • The switch from IB to ER is achievable, especially if you can articulate your passion for ER and demonstrate relevant skills.
  • ER recruiting timelines vary, with some structured processes in early fall and others operating on an ad hoc basis.
  • Networking and preparation are essential to stand out in the ER recruiting process.

If you’re serious about this transition, start networking immediately and keep an eye on openings at firms with strong ER programs. Good luck!
