Industry Switch Good for Generalist Roles?

I’m considering to a completely new sector without a lot of overlap that I’m fairly interested in learning. I would like to end up in a LO generalist seat in the future. Better pay, better firm, better II (for whatever that’s worth), but delay recruiting for 1+ years. Good move or bad move?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider when thinking about switching industries, especially if aiming for a generalist role in the future:

  1. Longevity and Experience:

    • Recruiters and headhunters often look for longevity in roles. Jumping too quickly or too often can reset the clock, making it harder for you to be poached by recruiters.
    • Typically, headhunters start scanning candidates with around 5 years of experience, and it becomes more common after 10+ years.
  2. Advancement:

    • Only consider switching if the new role offers a clear advancement in terms of pay, title, responsibility, or firm prestige. Lateral moves (same title/role) generally do not look good on a resume unless there is a significant improvement in the firm’s prestige or responsibilities.
  3. Networking:

    • Networking is crucial. Engage in industry leadership roles and trade groups to get noticed faster. Books like "Never Eat Alone" can provide valuable networking strategies.
    • If you dislike your current job, avoid expressing this negativity publicly. Instead, focus on gaining experience and excelling in your role to attract attention over time.
  4. Timing:

    • Delaying recruiting for 1+ years can be a strategic move if it allows you to gain more experience and make a more significant impact in your current role. This can make you more attractive to future employers.
  5. Career Progression:

    • Ensure there is a clear progression in your career path. If you are moving to a new sector, make sure it aligns with your long-term goals and provides opportunities for growth.

In summary, switching industries can be a good move if it offers significant advancement and aligns with your long-term career goals. However, be mindful of the timing and ensure you are not making lateral moves without clear benefits.
