What would be better experience for someone who wants to pursue a career in Equity Research and make for a more competitive applicant come recruiting time?
Assume both are boutique firms that are only regionally known.

Don't do ER. If you want to get into PE, do banking. Exit opportunities are limited in ER. I work in ER.
It sounds like the OP's preferred exit opp is ER, not PE. In which case he wouldn't have to worry about what the exit opps are like for ER...
I'm in ER too. Whether you want to do sell-side or buy-side ER long-term, I agree with the above poster that you can't really go wrong with either, IF you have a front-office position at the AM firm. If middle or back office or anything that's not directly related to equity analysis, I'd probably go banking.
If the two firms are really on the same level, I think I would go the IB route. Also depends what your role would be at the AM firm.
I don't see how you could go wrong with either. But if you really want to be in investing long-term (AM or ER or HF), I'd lean toward AM.
Again, though, you can't really go wrong with either.
Thanks for the feedback. My eventual goal is HF, with ER first so im not concerned about exit opps to PE. Im still a sophomore finishing my undergrad so im just looking for experiences to set me up for future positions.
