MBA to MMHF possible?

I work in ER and am curious is this is possible. I’m moving to a MMHF and hope to make this transition. I’ve seen some people do this on LinkedIn.

Anyone know about comp and recruiting? Also how do you know what sector you will get.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from an MBA to a Multi-Manager Hedge Fund (MMHF) is indeed possible. Here are some insights:

  1. Transition Feasibility:

    • Moving from Equity Research (ER) to a MMHF is a recognized path. Many professionals have successfully made this transition, leveraging their analytical skills and sector expertise.
  2. Compensation:

    • Compensation at MMHFs can be quite competitive. For example, a PM at a MMHF can earn mid 7-figures to low 8-figures, depending on performance and the size of the book they manage.
  3. Recruiting:

    • Recruiting for MMHFs often involves headhunters (HH) and networking. It's crucial to demonstrate a strong track record in ER and the ability to generate investment ideas.
    • Headhunters can be receptive to candidates with solid ER backgrounds, especially if they have shown consistent performance and have a deep understanding of their coverage sectors.
  4. Sector Assignment:

    • The sector you will cover at a MMHF can depend on your previous experience and expertise. Typically, your background in ER will guide the sector you are assigned to, but it can also be influenced by the needs of the fund and your discussions during the recruitment process.
