Senior Looking to get into Equity Research looking for Advice

Question

Hi all, I'm going into my senior year at a non-target and don't have previous ER experience but would like to work in ER when I graduate. Don't have any connections in Finance, and was wondering if the best way to network would be to message analysts on linkedln and ask to hear about their experience and potentially receive referrals to get interviews? Also wondering if I should take CFA level 1 in December or June 2021 and if that will impact me in trying to get an interview?

I literally have a ton. I used to download them for every pitch for an investment grade to BB rated public company, and then combine PDFs all into 1 master doc for my MD.

Alot of business school libraries give access to online databases where you can read equity research. The databse I used was Mergent Intellect, see if your library has any databases that you can access.

I am from a low target (or maybe even a non-target lol), but I got ER FT after summer. Here’s my take:

1) Still try the summer -> FT route... some bank take fresh graduates as their summer. A few in my intern class are fresh grads, and they got FT offer as well.

2) Join an investment club at your school and start publishing as much as you can. Obviously, ER articles would be preferred, but even macro analysis or M&A analysis would do.
