Should I do another masters?

Did my bachelors at Bocconi and masters at LBS. Have several ER / M&A internships, all in continental Europe (local players). I am receiving no answers to my apps. Should I do another masters to be eligible for ER or M&A internships that require penultimate year status? Or are there better ways to navigate this?

Would really appreciate any prev. experience or advice

Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing another master's degree might not be the most efficient solution to your situation. Here's why and what you could consider instead:

  1. Another Master's Degree:

    • While a second master's degree could technically make you eligible for internships requiring penultimate-year status, it comes with significant costs (both time and financial) and no guarantees of success. As highlighted in WSO threads, a master's degree is often a way to rebrand or get another shot at entry-level recruiting, but it doesn't necessarily solve the root issue if your applications aren't yielding responses.
  2. Alternative Strategies:

    • Networking: Focus on leveraging your existing network and expanding it. Reach out to alumni from Bocconi and LBS, as well as professionals you've connected with during your internships. Networking is often more effective than cold applications.
    • Target Smaller Firms: Consider applying to smaller boutique firms or regional players that may not have as rigid requirements for penultimate-year status. These firms can provide valuable experience and a stepping stone to larger institutions.
    • Tailor Your Applications: Ensure your CV and cover letters are customized for each role. Highlight your relevant experience in ER/M&A and your international exposure.
    • Off-Cycle Internships: Many firms, especially in Europe, offer off-cycle internships that don't require penultimate-year status. These can be a great way to gain additional experience and potentially convert into a full-time role.
    • Skill Enhancement: If you feel there are gaps in your skillset, consider certifications like the CFA, which is highly regarded in ER and M&A.
  3. Reassess Your Approach:

    • If you're not receiving responses, it might be worth seeking feedback on your application materials. Have a mentor, career coach, or someone in the industry review your CV and cover letters to identify potential improvements.

Ultimately, another master's degree should be a last resort. Focus on networking, targeting the right opportunities, and refining your application strategy to maximize your chances.

Another masters isn't going to solve your issues. You are either flunking the first stages of applications (tests/HV),  blacklisting yourself by applying over the limit at the same banks, or you're just unlucky.
