What are the different ways you classify equity research firms?

I'm interested in generating a comprehensive list of firms and how they're generally classified. Besides buyside and sellside, what are other ways ER firms are classified and what are the main firms that fall into those classifications?

From my limited understanding, there is BB on the sell side (GS/JPM/MS) , MM (Jefferies/RBC/Stifel), boutique, independent research firms, large AM firms(Fidelity/BlackRock/Capital Group).

What other firms and classifications are missing?
