Appropriate level of watch brands for every rank at IB?

I am in my third year in IB(M&A, if you need more info) at BB, considering purchasing Calatrava.  (with the money I made from my personal invesments) Thinking about having one, I have just noticed that my bosses (VPs, MDs) wear Rolex, JLC, IWC, etc. Then would it be of any problem for me if I wear PP?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of appropriate watch brands for different ranks in investment banking, along with insights into your situation:

Watch Brands by Rank:

  1. Analyst/Associate:

    • Entry-level bankers typically stick to more modest brands like Seiko, Longines, or Tag Heuer. These are respectable yet understated choices that won't raise eyebrows.
  2. Vice President (VP):

    • At this level, you start seeing Rolex, IWC, and Omega. These brands are a step up in prestige and align with the VP's growing responsibilities and compensation.
  3. Director/Managing Director (MD):

    • MDs often wear Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, or Vacheron Constantin. These are considered the "Holy Trinity" of watchmaking and reflect the pinnacle of success in the industry.

Your Situation:

As a third-year in IB at a BB, wearing a Patek Philippe Calatrava might raise some eyebrows, especially if your bosses (VPs and MDs) are wearing brands like Rolex, JLC, or IWC. While there's no strict rule against it, the perception could be that you're "punching above your weight" or trying to outshine your seniors. In IB, subtlety and hierarchy matter, so it's often better to align your watch choice with your rank.

If you're set on a Patek Philippe, consider starting with a more understated model like the Calatrava 5119G (~$22,500). It's elegant and refined without being overly flashy. However, if you're concerned about optics, you might want to wait until you're at least a VP or Director before stepping into the Patek Philippe league.

For the most part - it's only a problem if you make it one, and start incessantly talking about it or showing it off.  Worst case - someone thinks you are an ass for spending that much on a watch. Best case - you find someone who equally shares your love of watches, and the rest is history. 90% of the time, if not more, no one will notice or care.
