Best “quiet luxury” dress coat for IB in cold cities (NY / London / Hong Kong)?

Hey all — first-time post here, hoping the fashion sages can help me out.

I’ll be starting 1st-year analyst in New York (maybe “frequent trips to London / HK” in the mix), and I’m looking for a dress coat / overcoat that hits the balance:

  • Doesn’t look too flashy or try-hard
  • Keeps me warm walking in subzero / wind / rain
  • Works over suits / business wear
  • Will last a few years (both in durability and style)
  • Ideally under a “quiet luxury” or understated brand (I don’t want to look like I’m trying to flex)

Here’s what I’m considering so far:

  • A classic camel / navy wool overcoat from e.g. Burberry, Aquascutum, or Mackintosh
  • Something from “modern minimal” brands like COS or Theory (if they make good wool blends)
  • Maybe even a technical wool-blend from a brand like Loro Piana or Herno if the price / quality checks out

Questions I’ve got (and would love your advice):

  1. Coat style / length: Do people prefer mid-thigh, knee length, longer? What’s ideal for business walks in NYC winter?
  2. Material prioritization: Full wool vs wool-blend vs technical fabrics (water resistance, windproof, etc.) — how much should I care?
  3. Color: Navy vs camel vs charcoal — which one gives the most flexibility with navy/grey suits?
  4. Brands / models to watch out for: Any hidden gems, or coats people in IB / PE actually wear (that don’t draw attention)?
  5. Budget guidance: I’m okay spending if it’s worth it (say up to USD 1,000–1,500 range), but want good bang for buck.

Appreciate any pointers, photos of your own coats, or “I wore this walking to meetings in -10°C” stories. Thanks in advance!

I think it really depends on how formal your office culture is and how much time you actually spend outdoors. In cities like New York or London, a tailored wool or cashmere-blend coat in navy or charcoal always looks sharp without being flashy. I went through the same search last winter  comfort, warmth, and subtle quality really make a difference when you’re running between meetings in the cold.
