Brooks Brothers - Any difference?

I've heard that BB is a pretty reasonable place for summer interns to look. However, they have suits that range anywhere from the $400 "suiting essentials" to $2400, so what kind of suits were they referring to?

Also, if I go to Nordstrom Rack or Saks Off Fifth, should I just get it tailored at the store or go find a professional tailor? Any difference?

thanks

I really don't think this matters at all for summer analysts, as long as you don't look like shit. If your only making 1250 a week, why would you spend $500 a suit that you'll probably never wear nor will it even matter.

Depending on where you're working, most firms are bus. casual during intern season, right? Could be wrong, but mine is/was. Just grab some shirts and a few pairs of slacks and focus on making a good impression on your boss. I know plenty of guys who looked like they got dressed in the dark that still got offers. As long as you don't look like and idiot with crazy patterns and colors and $ sign cufflinks you should be ok. Grey and brown pants with blew and white shirts. Stick conservative and you should be ok.

^ I disagree with the above poster's comment on Brooks Brothers clothes. There are many different lines of Brooks Brothers, some of which is of more pedestrian quality (e.g. BrooksEase) and others of which is quite good (e.g. Golden Fleece and Black Fleece). Golden Fleece and Black Fleece suits are both fully canvassed, and the Black Fleece line is designed by Thom Browne. The material generally has a pretty good heft to it too, like 11-12 ounce wool. I'd much rather have a Golden Fleece or Black Fleece suit than most anything on sale at SYMS.

Seems like you know your material. My wife was a buyer for eight years and she always told me Brooks Brothers was kind of a running joke in that world. Not only suits, but their shirts too. Material, production was always on the low end. I always bought Brooks Brothers shirts ( like there look & feel) and would blow out all of my elbows on my shirts; which by the way seems to happen on all my shirts regardless of who they are made by.

I would disagree about not finding quality at SYMS.....you may just find last year’s style.

trigger1 - Given your wife's line of work, she probably had the chance to see a lot of premiere and high-quality garments. I wasn't trying to imply that there isn't quality at SYMS; just that there are several product lines at Brooks Brothers, some of which are really quite good.

I agree with you in that some of Brooks Brothers' non-iron and basic dress shirts aren't of particularly great quality, but I think they're good value for everyday wear to and from the office. They're only $60-70 a shirt and they should hold up for at least a year and a half, I would think. Plus, while I'm fortunate enough to own several garments by Attolini, Kiton, and Brioni, I do recognize that Brooks Brothers does a fine job making every-day wear for the working class. In fact, I wore a Brooks Brothers shirt yesterday and I'll probably wear it again in 2-3 weeks.

At the end of the day, I think I'm on the same page as you are in that good deals can be attained at a number of different locations, and given that most of the people on this forum are junior professionals, it makes sense not to break the bank on clothing.

It doesn't matter, especially for a first year. Get a nice suit/shirt for client meetings, and other than that BB should be okay.

Don't spend all your money on clothing before you get your bonus.

Not at all dude, chances are most people won't even know unless they are that insecure. I personally don't wear BB because it doesn't fit me at all. I went the day after christmas for their sale and I tried on literally every suit in the store. My arms are just too long. By chance I stumbled into the Burberry store and the suits fit me PERFECTLY. Its about wearing what you are comfortable in. With the exception of Hermes and Ferragamo ties which are pretty obvious, most business clothing is not easily identifiable. Wear what is comfortable to you.
