Custom suit in China

Hi all.

I want to get a new suit. My original plan was to buy one from SuitSupply as it's one of the most recommended brands in the finance & consulting community at its price point.

I'm going to be in China for an extended period of time this year. I know China can be a great place to get custom shirts & other formalwear -- should I just wait and get a custom suit in China instead of buying from SuitSupply?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, getting a custom suit in China can be an excellent option, especially if you're looking for high-quality tailoring at a competitive price. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Cost and Quality: Custom suits in China can be very affordable without compromising on quality. For example, one WSO user shared their experience of getting suits made in Suzhou for around $60 each, with great quality that lasted over a decade. Tailors in China often source high-quality materials and provide excellent craftsmanship.

  2. Tailoring Expertise: China has a rich tradition of tailoring, and cities like Shanghai, Suzhou, and Shenzhen are known for their skilled tailors. You can get a suit tailored to your exact measurements, ensuring a perfect fit.

  3. Comparison with SuitSupply: While SuitSupply is highly recommended for its quality and price point, a custom suit from China offers the advantage of personalization. You can choose the fabric, style, and details to match your preferences, which might not be as customizable with off-the-rack options.

  4. Recommendations: If you're in China, consider visiting reputable tailors. For instance, WSO threads mention that bespoke suits in Asia, including China, are often of high quality and worth exploring. Tailors like Ascot Chan or WW Chan in nearby regions are also highly regarded.

  5. Timing: If you're going to be in China for an extended period, it might be worth waiting to get a custom suit there. This allows you to take advantage of the local expertise and potentially save money compared to buying from SuitSupply.

In summary, waiting to get a custom suit in China could be a smart move, especially if you prioritize fit, customization, and value for money. Just make sure to research and choose a reputable tailor to ensure the best results.

If you’re going to be in China for a while, getting a custom suit there is probably a better move than buying from SuitSupply. Here’s why:

  • Better Fit & Customization: Tailors in China can create a suit to your exact measurements, whereas SuitSupply is off-the-rack with alterations.
  • Price & Quality: You can get a well-made, custom suit for a fraction of what you'd pay in the West, especially if you go to the right tailor. Some shops offer high-end Italian fabrics at very reasonable prices.
  • Reputation: Places like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen have well-known bespoke tailors, and if you research properly, you’ll find top-tier craftsmanship.

That said, it requires some effort—finding a good tailor, choosing fabrics, and multiple fittings. But if you want a suit that’s truly yours, it’s worth it.
