Hats

Hey, I just got accepted into a target school in Germany and am planning to eventually break into investment banking or management consulting. The problem is that I have an eye condition (photophobia), which forces me to wear hats to protect my eyes from light. Considering how traditional the finance industry is in terms of dress code, I’m wondering if this could be an issue.

Side note: I don’t suffer from migraines, so working long hours isn’t a problem

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the finance industry is indeed traditional when it comes to dress codes, especially in investment banking and management consulting. Wearing a hat in such environments might raise eyebrows, as it deviates from the standard professional attire. However, since your condition is medical (photophobia), there are ways to navigate this:

  1. Medical Accommodation: Be upfront about your condition when the time is right. Employers in reputable firms are generally understanding of medical needs, especially if you can provide documentation from a healthcare professional.

  2. Professional Appearance: Opt for hats that are as formal and neutral as possible. A sleek, dark-colored hat that blends with your attire might be less conspicuous and more acceptable in a professional setting.

  3. Alternative Solutions: Consider consulting with a specialist to explore other options, such as tinted glasses or other light-filtering solutions, which might be more aligned with traditional dress codes.

  4. Networking and Interviews: During networking events or interviews, it’s crucial to address this proactively. Explain your condition briefly and focus on your qualifications and enthusiasm for the role.

While the industry is traditional, firms are increasingly prioritizing inclusivity and employee well-being. As long as you handle the situation professionally and demonstrate your value, this should not be a barrier to your success.
