Is brand REALLY important?

I do not care much about brand for any reasons other than quality and reliability. Am I going to have to start to buy new button-downs and pants if they are not Brooks Brothers? I like to look nice, put together, and professional, but usually take the cheaper option if two of whatever I am searching for look the same. Will these tendencies be a detriment to my career even if I look good and perform well?

Just looking for some general guidance here.

I think you are oversimplifying the notion of a brand to just words on a label. A brand goes way beyond that and speaks to the quality of the fabrics, the cuts of the pieces, the colors available and the overall fit of the garment. It might also affect the durability as well as things like a replacement policy or an alteration policy.

I like Brooks Brothers because they understand workwear for banking and finance. They have good cuts, an acceptable color palette and the like. More importantly, I stick with the brand because I know exactly how their clothes will fit me because they keep it consistent from garment to garment and year over year. They are "my" brand because I know I can buy anything from their web site without wearing it first and I have a reasonable expectation on how it will fit my body. You simply cannot say that for every manufacturer out there.

I'm sorry, but I'm throwing monkeyshit at this.  I'm wearing a $100 H&M suit to Nasdaq today. It fits well and looks fine. It's navy and inoffensive.

I wore it last month when FTSE invited me for the Russell recon too.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
