London Clothing
Hi Guys,
I will be starting a year-long internship (uni placement) at a BB in AM in June and would like to know what clothes to buy.
I will have around £1000 to spend on suits, shoes, shirts etc, for when I’m in the office and working. The dress code is pretty strict, with business casual at the very minimum.
I’m looking for good quality that will last me.
A few Q’s:
-
How many suits? What colour?
-
How many shirts?
-
Ties?
-
Which shoes are comfiest and most durable for office wear?
Anything else you can think of would be greatly appreciated!
Are you from the UK? This is important to know. If you're not from the UK, you should purchase all your clothes at Garrison Tailors in order to demonstrate cultural assimilation.
Oh okay, I am from the UK
I don't live or work in London, but I have heard that brown shoes to the office are a big no-no, and that only black shoes should be worn. This came as a shock to me as brown shoes are very accepted in NYC.
I would’ve thought brown shoes would be okay as well, thanks for the insight
- 10x shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt (~£200). All white, different weaves
- 2x 2-piece suits from Charles Tyrwhitt (~£300). Both dark navy-ish colour.
- 1x shoes from Hackett (~£200). Black Oxfords.
- 1x shoes from Clarks (~£75). Black brogues. I found them far, far more comfortable than Hackett's, so I happily changed to these. My old manager used to wear shoes that looked like formal shoes on top, but were actually trainers... would recommend that for maximum comfort if you're brave enough
- Various ties from old wardrobe, mostly blue-ish. One penguin-patterned
Went to Charles Tyrwhitt last week and 8 shirts are now £210 :(
the amount of inflation since my last post hahahah
Thank you, I’ve heard CT is very good so will have to look there. A big thing is obviously how comfortable the shoes are. I’ve never been a big fan of the work shoes so may have to try the trainer type!
Good quality leather shoes will once you break them be as comfortable as trainers if not more as they should really follow the shape of your foot. Suggest you have a look at meermin for work shoes, rest of the advice is solid. I have 2-3 ties not more, just wore one to my first day and a client meeting as an intern.
Thanks for the advice, I’ll have a look at meermin as shoes are next on my list!
Similar to what another poster said but let me nuance a bit. Also note that most banks do casual Friday so you will only wear a suit/shirt four times a week:
- 5x white shirts (you only need four because you will wash them every weekend, however have one extra just in case one gets damaged/dirty)
- two suits, one dark blue and one dark grey. Do not get two blue suits, no idea why somebody above suggested that. If you can, get an extra pair of trousers for each suit as this saves you visits to the dry cleaners (you want to keep the nice pleat in your pants as long as possible) and because trousers are much less durable than the jacket
- two pairs of black oxfords. Do not get brogues, again contrasting what the other user suggested. Get two pairs of shoe trees as well
- blue, grey and black socks. Blue and grey obviously to match the suit you are wearing, and black as backup as they go with either
- start off with just one tie; you will almost never wear one but a must-have just in case
- when it comes to coats: a light rain coat is very handy and a warmer coat that fits well over your suit is nice to have
- large umbrella
- banker vest to complete the look
