At one of my internships in equity research a few months ago, my boss (sort of an unbalanced woman) told me never to wear a red tie to an interview. She said that at Morgan Stanley, only the VP's and MD's are allowed to wear red ties and it's a big mistake to wear one to a Morgan Stanley interview because it can be grounds for disqualification. I realize that this is probably the biggest load of crap, but wanted to know if anyone else has heard this before.

I have never herd that only VPs and MDs are allowed to wear read ties, but as far as an interview goes, I would definitely stay away from a red tie. Not really a rule but more of an unwritten law of interviews where formal business wear is required.
That being said, I don't believe that MS, let alone any firm, would disqualify a good candidate based on his tie. Can you imagine the interviewers sitting there in a review and saying something like "well he is a great candidate, knows his stuff, and would be a great fit for our team; however, he did wear a red tie so we just can not have him here"

Haha yea that's what I was thinking. Does a dark burgundy also count as red - meaning is it also a bold move? What shirt/tie color combos are good with a navy stripe or charcoal stripe suit?
Funny that you mentioned it was at MS. During one of my interviews with a MS VP we actually got to talking about fashion/dress.
Anyway, for a navy stripe suit, a white shirt with a yellow tie (perhaps with some subtle navy stripes) should look good.
for interviews, its not worth taking any risks. buy 3 white shirts, and 2 ties with navy in them. Yes, there are probably a million other combinations that are not a problem, but simple is the best path.

I have never heard this and have worn red to plenty of interviews. I thought it was considered a normal part of the "power suit"... or maybe i am the one that has been dressing poorly
I always goes with navy suit, light blue shirt and yellow elephant tie, one guy asked me "what's with the elephants? They run out of bulls?" after which he spent about 15 seconds laughing at his joke lol.

Nope, it is a TJ Maxx tie, although it is excellent quality, in fact I'd say it's better than both the Hermes ties I own. I got the offer but this wasn't BB type bank so to speak.
banker88, the right outfit will not land you 2nd round/internship, but the wrong one will ruin your chances.
I'm aware, I was wondering if the elephant tie ruined his chances (cause the guy laughed at him).
He wasn't laughing at me personally, kind of hard to explain if you weren't there but it more just light-hearted humor, combined with him cracking a joke about bulls and then laughing at his own joke followed by me laughing at him for laughing at his own joke. It was all rather funny :p
am i really the only one that thinks red and maroon are great color ties to wear with a charcoal suit at interviews?
... I wore a red tie and charcoal suit to all my interviews, at least the important ones. I doubt that you can go wrong wearing this combo
I've never worn anything other than a red tie/charcoal suit combo to all of my interviews...has worked well enough for me.
This is very dumb: A basic red tie (think stripe or subtle pattern) will never get you dinged.

I don't work at MS, but I did wear a red tie today with a gray suit and white tie and no one noticed or cared. It was a very light one by Vineyard Vines, which I think is pretty safe
