“Smart Casual”

Pretty basic question. Will be starting next week and wanna gauge exactly what the smart casual dress code entails. Slacks and button downs? Polos? Quarter zips?

This is what I have found just from looking on the internet but just want to make sure so I don’t fuck it up when I start.

Also, any recommendations would be great while I still have time to do some last minute shopping.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about the "smart casual" dress code and some recommendations:

Smart Casual Dress Code:

  1. Slacks and Button-Downs:

    • Slacks: Opt for well-fitted dress pants in neutral colors like black, navy, or grey.
    • Button-Down Shirts: Stick to classic colors such as white, light blue, or subtle patterns. Ensure they are well-fitted.
  2. Polos:

    • Polos can be a good option, especially in a more relaxed office environment. Choose solid colors or simple patterns.
  3. Quarter Zips:

    • Quarter zips can be a stylish addition, especially during cooler months. Pair them with a button-down shirt underneath for a polished look.

Recommendations for Last-Minute Shopping:

  • Dress Shirts:

    • Brooks Brothers: Known for quality and fit (~$80 - $100).
    • Banana Republic: Offers various fits and sizes (~$80 - $90).
    • Charles Tyrwhitt: Affordable and customizable (~$30 - $50).
    • TM Lewin: Good quality at a reasonable price (~$40).
  • Dress Pants:

    • Stick to neutral colors and ensure they are well-fitted. You can find good options at department stores or brands like Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers.
  • Shoes:

    • Invest in comfortable, stylish shoes as you'll be wearing them all day. Brands like Nordstrom offer a variety of solid options.
  • Accessories:

    • Keep it simple with a classic belt and a watch. Avoid overly flashy accessories.

Additional Tips:

  • Fit is Key: Ensure all your clothes fit well. A slim person in a classic cut shirt or a wider person in a slim fit will look out of place.
  • Confidence: Wear clothes that you feel confident in. The more you like your clothes, the more comfortable you'll be.

By following these guidelines, you'll be well-prepared for your first day with a smart casual wardrobe that is both professional and comfortable.
