SuitSupply vs high tier suits (TF, Brioni etc.)

Legit question: Can non-fashion experts (like you, your bosses and clients) really spot the difference between someone wearing a custom suit from SuitSupply (tailored) and a Brioni/Tom Ford?

Without checking it inside out and really digging into the fabric what are the visible differences? If any.

The most helpful WSO content highlights that for non-fashion experts, the visible differences between a tailored SuitSupply suit and a high-tier suit like Brioni or Tom Ford are minimal, especially at a glance. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Fit:

    • SuitSupply offers half-canvassed and fully canvassed suits with Italian-made wool, ensuring a sharp and tailored look. A well-fitted SuitSupply suit can rival the appearance of high-tier brands.
    • High-tier suits like Brioni or Tom Ford may have a more refined fit due to bespoke or made-to-measure options, but this difference is subtle unless you're a fashion connoisseur.
  2. Fabric Quality:

    • SuitSupply uses high-quality wool (e.g., Super 120s), but high-tier brands often use finer fabrics (e.g., Super 150s or higher) with a smoother texture and luxurious feel. However, this is more noticeable to the wearer than to an observer.
  3. Construction:

    • High-tier suits are typically fully canvassed and hand-stitched, which allows the suit to mold better to the wearer over time. SuitSupply suits, while high-quality, are often machine-made and may not have the same longevity or "molding" effect.
  4. Details:

    • High-tier suits may feature intricate hand-stitched details, unique linings, and subtle design elements that elevate their aesthetic. These details are hard to spot unless closely examined.
  5. Brand Perception:

    • High-tier brands carry a certain prestige and exclusivity, which can be a factor in environments where brand recognition matters. However, for most people, this is not immediately visible.

In summary, unless someone is a fashion expert or inspects the suit closely, the differences are not glaring. A well-tailored SuitSupply suit can easily hold its own in terms of appearance, especially in professional settings.

Short Answer:no
Long answer: It's complicated.
Firstly, a point about Tom Ford. His suits are lack for a better term a bit ill fitting, at least imho. The jacket and the sleeves are cut a bit too short for my taste, but TF is much more fashion forward compared to Brioni.
A MTM Suit Supply suit will almost always "fit" better than an off the rack unaltered Brioni/TF. Once you get into the higher end suit brands like Brioni, Kiton, RL Purple Label they usually have unfinished sleeves and unfinished hems(Bottom of the pants) because they assume you will take it to your local tailor and have them finished to your liking.

TLDR: No most people can't spot the difference between an OTR when taken to a tailor to finish and a MTM suit.

Agreed as someone who has both, to the average person you can't see the difference unless there's an exotic material or very fine knit that you get with a TF or above tier suit. To a trained eye, yes there are certainly small differences in stitching, construction, etc. but a very well tailored SS suit of decent fabric will be enough for the vast majority. If you can afford a TF/Brioni/LP, etc. the pride in the suit and the way you carry yourself should show, I would personally only wear a suit like this for black tie events in my personal life and not to impress clients unless I own the firm.

I have both, very marginal difference. I think only you’ll know, and for some reason it just feels better knowing you’re wearing Brioni/Zegna/Canali or Loro piana whatever it may be.
