Hey man. Crazy to come across this topic here. I'm a huge watch nerd, and while I don't own a Vortic I think what they're doing is worth the price. They also machine their own watch's cases and restore the old movements themselves. If you're a fan of USA-made stuff I say go for it. Oh, and if your wrist isn't tiny like mine. Their watches are large.

I've done a fair bit of talking to the owner, RT and he is a stand-up guy. I own a small side-hustle called Solomon Straps where we handcraft and sell leather watch bands, and RT and I have talked about collaborating.

Issue with a brand like Vortic, regardless of the quality or sex appeal of their watches, is that for that same price point of 6-7K one could get an (maybe CPO forsure) Omega, Rolex, JLC etc which represent the standard in the entry-level higher-end watches. So I think you'd really need to be passionate about their watch designs / heritage to really spring for one instead of a known tried and tested swiss counterpart.

No, but as a watch guy it's tough for me to fathom from their website that anyone who's trying to spend money on a pricey timepiece would look at, much less pull the trigger on, a watch that isn't one of the standard brands. I'm not saying that it's a poor brand or anything like that, but from a selling point of view I'm not sure why a no-rep watch brand would attract much attention.

That's totally fair and if you value a brand or item on that basis, this could be a worth it purchase for you. But from a resale or holding value standpoint coupled with brand-recognition and watch movement, it's tough to justify for me. But I'd argue if you're a contrarian buyer even when it comes to big-ticket items like a 7K watch, there are other brands/models which could fit that mold better

I think the average person buying a Vortic watch is probably EXTREMELY into watches and likely already owns several watches more expensive than the Vortic. There is actually a fairly large market for independent/microbrand watches, but it is saturated with so many brands that most of them just start to blend together. Vortic is doing something pretty unique that likely appeals to a very niche consumer, who is looking to change it up and expand their collection beyond the typical suspects.

Also, anecdotally, there is some guy out there who wore a Vortic randomly, and it made such an impression on someone they ran into that that person went out of their way to start a thread on the internet to learn more about the brand. I doubt a Submariner would have garnered the same reaction, which is why a Vortic might appeal to certain consumers.

I agree but honestly I don't think the guy buying the Vortic is so tired of the "humdrum" competition out there of Rolex/Omega/JLC/whatever that he/she resorts to getting the Vortic. I can't stress enough that I don't have anything against Vortic but genuinely feel that the guys seriously vetting the Vortic watches can't afford/don't want to drop the cash on a name-brand watch. It's not a sign of financial firepower or anything given everyone feels that spending on different things is appropriate to a certain degree but to the average watch collector, there is no reason in my head which would convince someone who was able to comfortably afford a name-brand swiss watch to get a Vortic type of piece. Again, nothing wrong if you do but I don't thing uniqueness is the reason people would buy one unless they have no other way to express themselves with a unique timepiece
