Watches in Office?

Hi, I am an incoming IBD FT analyst in NYC. I have a couple of nice watches (Rolex & Omega). They are all stainless steel with no diamonds. Is it bad to wear there in the office? I am concerned with upsetting seniors or making a bad impression.

Additional Context: I interned at this firm last summer and decided not to wear them during the summer. Any advice is appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, wearing a Rolex or Omega in the office as a junior analyst can be a bit of a double-edged sword. While stainless steel models without diamonds are more understated, the perception of wearing luxury watches as a junior can vary depending on the culture of your firm and the personalities of your colleagues.

Here are some key takeaways from WSO discussions:

  1. Perception Matters: Luxury watches, especially brands like Rolex, can sometimes give off the impression of being flashy or entitled, particularly if you're still early in your career. Some seniors or colleagues might view it as trying to "flex" before you've earned your stripes.

  2. Play It Safe: Many users recommend sticking to a more conservative approach as a junior. Opt for a simpler, less noticeable watch (or none at all) until you've established yourself. Once you've built credibility and rapport, you can gradually introduce your nicer watches.

  3. Firm Culture: The culture of your specific firm plays a significant role. If the environment is more formal and conservative, it’s better to err on the side of caution. On the other hand, if you notice that others, including seniors, wear luxury watches, it might be more acceptable.

  4. Alternative Options: If you’re into watches but want to avoid potential judgment, consider brands like Nomos, Longines, or IWC, which are classy yet understated. These can be great conversation starters without drawing too much attention.

Ultimately, the advice is to focus on blending in and letting your work speak for itself, especially as a new analyst. Once you've proven yourself, you'll have more freedom to express your personal style.
