What branded clothes / designer fashion items are worth splurging on?

Looking to go shopping this week and want to create a wardrobe of some affordable items and some high-end items. Wanted to see what are the kind of items that are "worth" spending the extra $ on?

I’m always willing to spend more on items I wear regularly i.e Shoes, Belt, Winter coat etc. Also worth investing in a nice cashmere sweater if it’s cold at your desk.

As far as if high end are worth the money, it’s up to you. Just try and avoid paying full retail if you can. Find some brands you like and try some things on to know your size, then you can be more confident when shopping for deals online.

I think the most important thing to remember is not to buy an item of clothing just because it's from a certain brand. Above all, you don't always have to spend loads to look good, the fit is just as important so don't be afraid to get stuff tailored or hemmed to fit properly. Working in a client facing role if what you wear isn't flashy but fits well it speaks wonders.

Always spend on these:

  1. Shoes
  2. Tailoring (rarely used nowadays but still always worth the investment)
  3. Good fitted work shirts (and replace them as they start to wear! No one wants to see marks on collars/cuffs/underarms!)

Like others have said, I'll always spend more on things like a tailored sports jacket, shoes, shirts. But every day stuff like socks I'll just get from Uniqlo because they're a high turnover piece of clothing. Best to be considered with your purchases.

I have a range tbh, for more casual oxford style shirts I wear to work I'll get Ralph, Brooks Bros, J Crew and if necessary have my tailor adjust them so that they fit properly but for the most part off the shelf works well. For more formal shirts I go to Ralph and Brooks but I also make sure to buy a solid stock from Emmet, Eton and Budd when I visit London. I'm actually planning to go via there for some more in a couple days on my way back to the US.

I wouldn't pick the high fashion houses for work shirts, they often have pretty stupid looking collars and don't have good quality materials or build despite high purchase cost.

Probably the two most important things:  1) Your shirts have a finite lifespan, they'll pick up stains that wont be able to be washed out around the cuffs/underarms/collar so don't be afraid to admit when a shirt has reached the end of it's life. If you compare a white shirt that sees regular wear against a brand new one you'll quickly see that they do dull down so it's important to keep them looking fresh and clean for yourself and for other's sake. 2) Make sure they fit properly, take it to a tailor and have him make sure they look fitted to you and also have the perfect fit on the cuffs as well with your suit jackets.
