I have an orientation meeting for an Accounting Fraternity coming up. The event description says "dress casual," but I dont know what type of casual they mean.
For a bunch of college kids, they could take casual as shorts/jeans and a t-shirt. I understand that casual dress should mean a nice button down and slacks, but I dont want to go there and be overdressed if everyone is really taking the "dress casual" to the extreme, and of course I dont want to go in shorts and a t shirt if everyone else is going to be dressed in "real" casual attire.
Any ideas as to what to do, maybe something in between to play it safe?

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm also thinking it could possibly be actual casual in the way a college student would interpret it. Its just an informational kickoff meeting/social for an Accounting fraternity.

Go with polo and jeans. Believe me, no way in hell an informational meeting is business casual or dress.
I'm thinking thats what I'll do. You're right, considering that the description I read was meant for potential new members who probably have little to no knowledge on the varying levels of dress code, I think this "casual" actually does mean casual.

Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday are all good bets.
I'd actually go Monday or Thursday, I think the sweater thing in Wednesday is a little casual (I would wear it to work in a business casual setting but I would be more conservative for an info / pre-interview session)
I'm wearing the Wednesday sweater/button-up combo tonight for a networking event, so I may be a little biased, haha. In my opinion, the suit/tie combo for an info session, or the Hillary pant-suit equivalent for girls, is a bit too try-hard.

When I went to those informational / pre-interview sessions, almost everyone was in business attire, even though they said business casual. Suit plus tie.

Where do you go to school? If your in the south just throw on a tie and your good. You don't nees to wear suit pants but make sure your jacket is blue. This is common attire for lawyers in the south.

I've been invited to attend an event at a consulting firm's office (in Toronto). The dress code is 'casual' and I'm really not sure what that means in this case. I'm coming from an engineering background and to me casual is a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, but I'm guessing that would probably not be reasonable here. So what should I go with? Casual shirt and khakis? I assume shorts, jeans and polo shirts would probably all be a bad idea?

Maybe it is a NYC thing, for all corporate events, even if it were casual, most people (including me) still wear a suit. If the event were super "casual", I just take off the blazer and keep the tie on.

Jeans and a polo/shirt would be entirely fine as far as I'm concerned.
I'm sure HR is fully aware of your engineering background, but khakis and a polo / button up is your safest bet. There is also no shame in sending HR a quick email to confirm your attire.
