Unless you've got strange proportions, I don't see any point in getting custom made shirts. Seriously, just go to Brooks Brothers and get a bunch of non-iron shirts in some staple colors or order from Bonobos online.
Because they fit like a glove and you won't look like a walking sail.
If you have money to blow, it's worth every dime. Look on Groupon or LivingSocial and you'll see a bunch of places offering made-to-measure suits / shirts.
If you don't have money to blow, just get a bunch of slim-fit non irons from Tyrwhitt or Brooks Brothers.
BB slim fit or extra slim fit shirts definitely don't fit like a sail. And Bonobos' stuff has a relatively athletic fit. Again, no need to waste money on this sort of stuff.
Charles Tyrwhitt shirts are cheaper, tailored, and similar quality compared to BB. Why buy a more expensive shirt to go through the hassle of tailoring it?

Many people have said that even slim fit CT shirts are slightly big. I'm thinking even if I buy BB or CT, I'll have to get them tailored.
Agreed. I used to be a BB and CT slim fit guy. But now I got into made-to-measure, and I don't plan on looking back. At $100 a shirt (versus $50 - 60 for BB / CT), I would rather have half as many great shirts versus having a lot of mediocre shirts.

I suffer from the fat neck, broad shoulders, normal waist issue. i.e., i'm hench as foook! makes it difficult to get shirts which fit.
Just had fitting for two made-to-measure shirts ($75/shirt), couldn't be happier. I have a somewhat thin lower back compared to the rest of my upper body so this eliminates that dreaded "parachute back". Then again, I've never bought shirts from BB to have them tailored so I'll probably look into that.
kmzz... are you pretty muscular? Because I have issues sometimes with the arms of ESF shirts,... I haven't tried the brooks bros shirts but, I have have around a 32 waist and large chest shoulders back and arms from training.
I'm kinda weird proportions, and think the custom shirts are worth the dough (especially if you can find a groupon or similar ecoupon, which is fairly often). My 5 favorite shirts are all from Blank Label and all purchased at about 50% off.
For the money, tailor a shirt that you got OTR. Custom shirts are just wasting extra money.
Depends what you need done, a lot of times tailors charge per operation. If you need to do more than just slim out the waste it's probably worth just getting a custom one to begin with. I had a few OTR done and it ended up costing the same as custom.
Exactly. A MTM shirt is around $100. CT and BB shirts go for between $50 and $100. Add in an extra $10 - $25 for tailoring and you're almost as if not more expensive than a MTM shirt.
Definitely custom made. I have tried shirts from landsend (on the low end, which in actuality are no different in quality or style than more expensive Brook Brothers shirts- others may disagree). Ultimately I ended up getting custom made shirts from a company called mytailor dot com. They measured me in person, and i had one shirt made at a time and then tweaked the measurements a couple times until they were perfect. Then I placed larger orders for shirts with high quality fabric (thomas mason) which lasts longer, and looks / feels great. I highly recommend it, as anytime i need new shirts I don't need to shop for them or worry if they will fit, I just pick out some fabric swatches I am interested online and place my order. Simple as that.

I'm by no means a slim guy (5'6", 150 lbs. on a good day) and BB extra slim is the best-fitting off-the-rack shirt I've found. Way slimmer than CT or Thomas Pink slim fit, without being tight. I get very little mileage out of my dress shirts (6 months, max, before I blow out an elbow), so I prefer to spend $70 on BB rather than $200 on custom.
Given that you spend most of your life in a dress shirt $70 seems a little on the low side. I find paying that little bit extra for something I wear for many hours a day worthwhile.

Yes but you don't spend your whole life in the same dress shirt; in fact, I only get about 3-6 months wear out of one.
By that logic, do you also spend $20 bucks on a pair of underwear?
By the way if anyone is looking for a good MTM tailor, I recommend MyTailor.com. It's kind of a budget looking website which turned me off at first, but they visit the major US cities two or three times a year and you can go get a fitting in person and look at and feel the cloth yourself, which is infinitely better than looking at images online. I have a bunch of shirts from them and they are awesome. I imagine most of their business is from in-person visits and the website is just so customers who have already been measured can quickly order new shirts based off of the measurements that they already have on file, which is why it's pretty basic.
If you are in NYC and don't want to wait for the Joe and the MyTailor crew, I also highly recommend CEGO. Another seriously budget looking website but I recommend going in person. The shirts are awesome and made locally, which doesn't really make a difference to me but some people like to know that their shirts were made in the USA.
I am generally very wary of "measure yourself" online "custom shirt" operations, especially ones that don't offer to remake your shirts if they screw them up but instead will compensate you to go to a local tailor to get it fixed.

Nothing can match the perfect fit of custom made shirts. It's totally worth it. It's detailed to the point they will make the cuff on your watch arm just a tad bigger.
Tailored and custom have many letters
Hugo Boss slim fit has always fit me best. Sorta pricy but never complained wearing it. Definitely fit me a lot better than CT, BB, or express
Anybody use JHilburn before (jhilburn.com). The execs at my company use them and just curious if any of you guys have any experience with them and the quality versus other places like BB.
Custom made shirts can be great but tailored shirts tends to be OK most of the time. Unless you are a VP or higher don't worry about getting custom shirts. Custom made shirts are not designed to be worn every day. Try threadsandshirts (Threads & Shirts) or something, get the closest fit and have a tailor take it in or alter it for you. The shirts will look leaps and bounds better than anything off the rack and you wont spend a fortune.
