An idea to make WSO stronger

Patrick and others,

I was thinking it would be convenient for newcomers to the site if we had a sort of "Getting started at WSO" tips for new users. Obviously, I think the site is very well put together when I log on I know where I want to click and what I want to access.

But maybe after a new user registers, they could be greeted 5/10 suggested threads that provide quality information or some form of a tour/guide to making their way around the site. Not that isn't user friendly, but I feel it would be more welcoming to attracting and keeping new users.

Maybe some suggested clicks to get them started. Just thinking out loud here..

I completely agree. Also, one of those clicks needs to emphasize the importance of the search function. I think retaining the quality posters on WSO is even more important than drawing new users and that experienced posters will be inclined to leave after they've seen their 500th "how to network?" or "is [my university] a target?" thread posted.

If you look back at WSO posts through the years, there have been a lot of quality contributors who don't come around anymore. They undoubtedly left for a number of reasons, but it's worth asking whether or not they would have stayed had the content not began to water down from new users.

The search function is kind of weak. It has been discussed and the cost to upgrade it is fairly significant. Honestly, we could have a full time librarian on this site to direct people to the specific posts they desire and 10% of people would use it and the rest would just post repeated shit. The stuff that kills me is when someone posts a question that is 99% similar and answered before, yet because it is not 100% exact people feel the need to ask it again.

In the last 10 pages there has to be 10 drug test questions, 10 target school questions, 10 how do I network questions, etc. People don't want to search.

As for the basic question thread, there is a FAQ and stickied topics.

With that profile you should transfer to Bumblefuck State.

Maybe we could pull like a top ten questions list to recommend as a reading.

Obviously we already have most commented, but we don't have a "most asked" like the idiotic questions you guys are referring to.

Agree with someone above, the search function on this site is by far the worst I've seen. Something needs to be done...only thing that bothers me.

hey guys, I'll probably make the plunge soon upgrading the Search function, but it will be over $5k/year due to the size of the index.

I'm not sure how much better it will be, but I agree Search is still a weak part of the site.

In terms of common questions asked, maybe we could start adding those into the FAQ? Suggested questions that always come up that are not specific to an individual?

Patrick,

I used the search function the other day and it was fine. Google works extremely well also. I would save the 5K and just add on the faq's section or create stickies. People are going to ask about drug tests and background checks no matter how perfect the search is.

well the site uses "Google Custom Search" so theoretically it should pull up the same content as if you were searching with the "site:" command in Google.

The stickies unfortunately I think will get out of control...I prefer to have a more robust FAQ section...almost like a wiki. Issue is getting that up or deciding how to organize it.

Will give it some thought...

Thanks, Patrick

Agree that the stickies could get out of control. Adding to the FAQ list may be the way to go.

While search isn't perfect, I would hesitate to spend that on updating the search for a change that really isn't quantifiable. It helps to also know HOW TO search, many do not.
