Best Comments Section

I don't know how difficult this would be but I think a 'best of' section that compiles the best comments (based on SBs and/or chosen by Mods/Patrick) would be really useful and interesting. Again, don't know if this is an easy or even realistic idea from a programming perspective but figured I'd throw it out there.

Should be relatively easy to track down all of blastoise's posts.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

It would be pretty difficult to have to sift through years worth of comments.

Maybe a Best Blog Posts section would be easier to create?

Yea, the best comments thing is hard to do... maybe the most SBed comments would be doable. Honestly, don't see how it would add much to the site. Probably only for the people with 2,000+ banana points that get bored on occasion. ;)

I do like that, though, ITF.

I think a reasonable solution would be to do something similar to what Quora does, in that you could have the Mods be granted the ability to mark the "Extraordinary Answer" threads, and then have a sub-forum where users can sift through the purified top WSO content. To some extent it would be similar to the FAQs, but would work in an alternative capacity as the "Extraordinary" threads section would not necessarily be focused, and could even contain unhelpful threads that are instead hilarious.

Just a thought.

There are plenty of forums that have a 'bestof' kinda thing. Maybe have it be user submitted then approved by mods?

That could definitely work, though for Patrick's sake it's probably best to automate all systems as much as possible. Perhaps, as said above, some sort of system which tracks the amount of SBs on the comment, the number of replies to the comment within the given thread, the amount of SBs/MSs given out to the other comments in the thread, etc.

I definitely think it would be an awesome feature. Definitely a time saver that would keep a lot of us from having to read everything that gets posted, haha.

The thing is, we have a way to rate the best threads, why not focus on this more? I'd rather more people use the 5-banana ranking system then focus on single posts. If we did start doing that, we'd be getting a whole lot of one-liners as "best posts" because somebody managed to sum up one side of a political argument in one douchy statement. At least if an entire thread is marked as a "best thread", you know you've got some quality reading material.

WSO could finally just go full-retard full-reddit and adopt the upvote. Then you could sort comments within each thread per upvote. This would then create a new problem though as users could potentially then be tracked on a karma-like system which would run parallel-to, and ultimately undermine, the existing SB system...
