Eliminating WSO Groups

Hey guys, so I was looking over groups and realized that although there have been a handful of very popular groups over the years, some with hundreds of member, very few of the groups are active except for the Certified User private group.

That got me thinking, the Group functionality of the site is pretty heavy and slows it down, so why not just create a new forum called WSO Groups? Each thread under that forum would be for that specific group / topic for like-minded people to coordinate meetups, discuss their alma mater, etc. The threads/groups with the top activity would get stickied to the top of the Group forum.

Besides speeding up the site, this would also have the benefit of cleaning up the navigation by removing Groups along top. For the Certified Users, we would still have a private section of the site that only they could access (with private chat, etc).

I wanted to run it by you guys because I know a lot of you have joined groups, but it doesn't look like an active / popular feature.

Thoughts?
Patrick
