...not exactly a ton of people....yet.
Yeah, I don't see it picking up since it would require people to reveal their trueeee identityyyyyy.
oooh i get it. no more hiding behind screen names and big fancy rants once you join a professional networking site. makes sense.
Haha yeah, people would have to be civil or at least not act like douche bags. I joined.
Well, at least your screen name on this site doesn't have to be remotely similar to your trueeee indentityyy.
Then you'll have to deal with creepy stalkers and the like.
Phew.
ah crap now i have to change my screen name....then become a douche!
Actually, in all seriousness, I think it's a refreshing change from most finance linked groups. I joined quite a few of them a couple years ago and have had to start blocking all these emails that spam my inbox. Most of them seem to be for bogus jobs or netweorkng events in Mumbai or pointless posted by people trying to raise their profile and use LinkedIn like a soapbox to get their names out there.
But yeah, there is the fun of being able to trash talk companies, and politicians without your HR department looking over your shoulder.
Remember that guy, "LondonE1 " or something who got called out by his boss for talking shit on WSO? Even if somebody was acting like a turd, I hate to see them get troubled in real life for what might have been sarcasm or blowing off steam where it can't do any harm.
The bulbasaurs and Marcus Halberstrams of this forum wold have to report to sensitivity training or some shit like that.
Victor252 stop being a pussy. Why would you change your display pic? Anthony D's real life pic looked good on your account. Did the kid send you a threatening PM? lol
Yes he did. He's threatening to send me more more pics. Besides, Courage Wolf is my life coach and I thought I'd share the inspriation.
Besides, it was only funny for a while and I don't want to make a joke out of Anthony's face...well that didn't come out right but you get the idea. It would just get old.
This is has been the best post i have read so far this morning.
I didn't send any PM's. I was out last night so I must have missed all the fun.
1) I am not a kid
2) If you want to go onto my LinkedIn and steal my profile pic then feel free. Email me and I will send you a less shitty and un-cropped picture. It was taken at a finance conference where I was a panelist on renewable energy.
I will agree that anonymity has it's benefits and would not want this site to be completely made up of peoples real names. That being said there is a huge difference between being a little loose with comments and being a total jack ass. If I remember correctly LondonE1's identity was only outed after he acted like a total asshole to everyone on the board. If he had just been a little less of a tool people would not of done what they did.
Anonymity also produces a lot of the top monkey shit posters. Now this wouldn't be an issue if not for the fact that this site tends to be one of the 1st stops people go to for information and help. When you have someone spewing shit or talking out of their ass with zero accountability a site can go to shit real fast. If you look back there was a sizable outrage over some of the more notorious trolls.
The remedy? An increase in moderators which I think quelled the storm a lot. Now I am pretty open about who I am because when I give advice or offer help I want there to be transparency. There is a lot of make believe and acting like MD's on this site. This is also a reason why the little gold stars came into place because there was no way to for people to discern between industry advice and a freshman giving his opinion.
Now if someone wants to play games then go right ahead. I have mod powers, but a) use the lightly and b) do not use them when there would be a conflict of interest. I also know most of the other mods and they would take a dim view certain behavior.
This site is a lot of fun and a wonderful tool. My primary goal on here is to help others and continue learning myself. Regretfully I never had a site like this and was admittedly was very naive when I was in school. When I extol the importance of an internship it is because I never had the opportunity to intern while in UG and saw the results. When I tell people to avoid BO and go other routes is because I mistakenly took a BO role ( did not know the difference at that time ), hated it and quit within 6 months. When I answer questions on Corporate banking, commercial banking, leadership programs, etc it is because I worked in Corporate banking and have had formal leadership training experience. I was never in IB nor do I tell people that I was. In a nut shell, I have had a lot of experiences and have made the best decisions I could without much help. I now try to give as much help as possible because I know what it is like to make choices blindly.
On a final note. This site is full of people in the industry. I know dozens of them and they have been good friends and great resources. This site is very unique in that respect. It has been my experience that if you are helpful, earnest and a quality poster people will reach out to you and help you or get to know you. If you act like a douche you can kiss goodbye any chance of knowing who people really are or getting their help. I stress this fact. This site can be very powerful when it comes to networking and getting jobs. A large majority of people on here are college kids with no pull, but there is a sizable amount of professionals who come here on a daily basis. Keep that in mind.
I'd like to join the LinkedIn group, but it appears that there's no option to not show the group on my profile (as there is for every other group that I've joined). I obviously am a big fan of WSO, and don't mind putting my identity up there for other members of the group, but I don't know if I want my public professional profile to include that. Admin - is that something you can enable?
