New WSO Home Page Redesign is Live!
Hey guys, as you can probably tell, we just released a dramatically different version of the home page. It still needs some polishing now that we can see it on live with real updated / data, but by and large, what we did was the following:
-
For logged out visitors, we tried to focus more on getting them to register, pointing them to the main forums and main products & services...it can be overwhelming when you come onto WSO and see so much content, so we really tried to clean everything up and funnel visitors into the buckets that would most likely interest them (this exposes/allows logged out users to jump to whatever forum they want with 1 click) or browse the top content right below that.
-
For logged in users, highlighting the Top Recent Content, right at the top of the page with less clutter, no sidebar. We realized that a lot of registered users were/are using the home page for content discovery and would ignore the sidebar, so we thought we'd put our best recent stuff front and center instead of just across the left side (this spacing, previews, etc still needs work, but I think it's an improvement for consuming content).
Change is always tough so for those that hate it, but please give it a shot...and check back by end of next week when it will be looking much cleaner. Of course, as always, happy to listen to ways we could make it better from the community. I'm all ears!
Thanks as always for all your support and stay tuned!
Patrick
I think the titles are too short and a lot is getting cut off. I like the new layout but I think the formatting could use some improvement.
I agree, especially pronounced while using a phone.
No serifs in titles, please. Studies have shown that serifs, and especially serif-san serif combinations strain the eyes when read from PC.
I like it. There is enough text to indicate if the article or discussion will be worth reading. Keep up the innovation.
I've noticed the front page doesn't communicate with the general forum for what is "new". Everything on the front page is always "new" and has 0 comments read for all articles, despite me reading it on the general forum previously. I tried attaching screenshots but it wouldn't let me. Maybe this is just on my end though.
feel free and email me screenshots (andy@wallstreetoasis) and I can fwd to our developer
Emailed!
don't mind the new layout, just really wish search was improved and replies were still indented.
for search, I'd like to be able to type a phrase in that's in the comments, or be able to search my own comments more easily. often times I want to reference another thread from the past and remember something that was said in it but not the title. it would be great if I could search my own comment history this way.
also, it'd be nice to search your own comment history by SB/MS count.
Thanks for the feedback! replies not indented anymore?!
you just replied to me and it's not indented on my browser (chrome)
Looks great, but for some reason (on my computer at least) when I open up a thread, it's getting cut off or not loading correctly. I refreshed a few times and then it worked. But other websites were loading okay.
ah shit, can you send us a screenshot what you mean? or put it right here in this thread? what a nice Friday :-)
Yep - will do when I see it happen again.
I'm not a big fan of the new layout, but like I tell my girlfriend, "the fastest way to get over it is to get used to it"
ha, fair...what do you miss most about the old layout? did you use the right column? Popular topic or forum block?
Thanks, Patrick
