Suggestions: Headhunters, Coconuts, and Bottle Service

(Every now and then I like to take off my hf hat and put on the old start-up hat.)

Suggestions:

  1. Add a headhunter forum: There are already some good (isolated) threads floating around, but I think the topic warrants a dedicated forum. It be a good resource for all the analysts going through the buyside recruitment cycle.

You can also have your headhunter list pinned to the top.

  1. Award coconuts (or whatever other monkey reference floats your boat): Bananas and certified users were good ideas, but I think a discretionary coconut award system would be nice. There are quality non-certified/low banana count posters out there and awarding coconuts would be a good way to identify those posters. You can limit "coconut granters" to certified users or some other hurdle.

Example - Non-certified (maybe they don't want to disclose their identity) poster with 20 bananas makes a quality comment in a thread. Certified user recognizes this as a helpful/good response and gives the comment a coconut. Over time, the non-certified user accumulates more coconuts from the community and is recognized as a quality poster.

I'd also suggests a feature to throw monkey poo at bad posts. j/k

  1. Bottle Service Index: Think of it like the Big Mac Index or Harvard MBA Indicator. The minimum price/amount of bottle service required to secure a table fluctuates with the health of the finance job market. Whether it's SF, NY, or London, you can get a decent sense of how good things are based on the bottle minimum at clubs. You should publish a monthly index to show how that minimum is moving.

J/K about #3. Please don't do it.

  1. I'm a little hesitant to add a Headhunter forum because in my opinion that really falls under the Get a Job forum. I don't really think that there are enough specific headhunter discussions to warrant an entire new forum. Other opinions?

  2. I like the idea of users awarding other users points. Although the User Point system is fairly sophisticated in Drupal (the content management system WSO uses), I'm not sure how easy it is to create different types of points (ie coconuts). I could easily make it so certified users could award users Bananas, for example.

BUT - No joke, your throwing monkey shit idea is on my to-do list. I was thinking of having a link at the bottom of every post that would say "Send Gift" and it would bring you to 2 options. Send a user a "Pure Gold Banana" to thank them for quality contributions OR throw "Monkey Shit" at them for poor contributions - each would cost like $0.25 cents (like Facebook's e-gifts) and we could keep track of which users have a lot of Gold Bananas and which ones have a lot of monkey shit thrown at them. The $0.25 would help me pay for the development of this (which will probably take $500-$1,000 of developer time if it is possible) and would make sure that users are sending gold bananas / monkey shit only when warranted.

thoughts?

Get a Job's main demographic is college students. You might want to consider a forum for all the analysts in ib/pe/hf who continually ask themselves "what next?". Transition is an important topic for working professions.

I'm taking this from the old video game playbook, but you could also consider feature "unlocks" as you accumulate more bananas. New users get their golden bananas capped (lets say 5) and no monkey shit throwing privileges. As you accumulate bananas, you can grant more golden bananas and are allowed to throw shit (initially capped and gradually increases). Too much shit thrown at you and there is a demotion (maybe even leads to a permanent/temporary community suspension from posting) and you begin to lose privileges. As crude as it is, setting a high hurdle to throw monkey shit is probably a good incentive (i.e. certified users, posters with 50 golden bananas, or posters with 150 regular bananas). You essentially have to be a behaved/good contributor (to avoid getting a lot of shit being thrown at you) to have shit throwing privileges, and it lets the community police/reward itself.

Monetization probably deserves its own thread lol. It can be a financial leak hosting a site like this and I commend you for doing this. I know my really talented developer friends (the kind of guys who build the most popular sites on yahoo/google) charge an arm and a leg doing independent projects like this (or demand equity).

I was on a forum that had this feature. You were limited on the amount of poo you could fling and the number of kudos (good posts) to three a day, if I recall correctly. You were able to ignore posts with a certain amount of poo. Something happened to posters with high poo count too but I can't remember what it is now. The feature was removed when the board "upgraded." People wanted it back and I stopped visiting a few months after anyway.
