Thoughts on new header

Hey Pat, just thought I'd throw a few thoughts out there after a few days of the new header:

1) Flip the Follow Us and | to the other side of account stuff, it's kind of annoying

2) Not a huge fan of the dropdowns on the right hand side, they tend to drop over each other (this doesn't happen on the left hand side)

3) Group Notifications (thought I'd throw this in there, if there's any way to notify for new group posts like there are PMs, have mentioned a few times just thought I'd get back to it)

1) Follow us and i are going to stay where they are for now. I'm sure thenextweb.com knows a lot more about UI than either one of us. What we will do is increase the spacing and maybe put in some sort of dividers between the icons so it's clear that each stands alone

2) We need to left align the dropdown on the "i" like the others. We made them left aligned so that it wouldnt get cut off on smaller screens like ipads, etc... I think when we fix the alignment of the "i" dropdown, it will fix your issue...although not sure i see overlap? each one should disappear when you hover over a new one...

3) probably yes, but pretty low on priority list...

First we want to keep improving menu...#1 is making it so when you are scrolling down, the blue nav bar stays at the top of your screen so you dont have to scroll all the way back up to jump somewhere...

As well as making the "In reply to" tabs dynamic so when you click them, instead of jumping you up to the comment a person is replying to, the comment they are replying to slides open above response...

...and we need to make it so replies generate a new notification first (before groups)...= 100x more frequent

Patrick to see the overlap issue, mouse between the "i" in the top-right and the bell or, to a lesser extent, the monkey. The latter two overlap the "i" dropdown if done quickly enough, such as when somebody is quickly scrolling to the search function or their profile, and it tends to linger.

Out of curiosity, what was the reason for the switch? I really liked to old format and I'm not so wild about this new one; am I one of the only people who feel this way? Regardless, the site still works great and I appreciate you guys keeping it working so well.

1) Works for me, just a personal preference, others might not care

2) The overlap is brief and the new link you hover over is on top so it's not a big issue, just a minor design thingy

3) Cool beans, just getting it out there.

Thanks for the responses, I love the new look/design, just wanted to get you another data point! Can't wait to see what you guys have next

Silvio, thanks for your feedback. The primary reason was to reduce clutter in order to make the navigation cleaner so that users can navigate easier and understand the different sections of the site.

Is there something specific about the old format you liked better? We aren't fully done with the functionality with this one yet, so hopefully when we finish it (especially having it stay at top when you scroll), you will like it.

Thanks, Patrick

Would it be possible to bring back the old, white dropdown with account stats and work the forums dropdown into that? I feel like it would take up less space, it looks a little cleaner, and you'd be able to scroll with it.

Oh, you mean just revert the last 4 weeks of work and clutter up the header again? :-) Uh, no.

People naturally hate change but I can tell you this header is 10x cleaner and as soon as we allow it to scroll, it will be just as functional as before, I promise. All of your stats are right under your monkey header. Is there something in there that you think should be shown in the main nav bar?

What is surprising is that ~80% of the people that have commented on it think it looks much better than before. It still needs a bit of work like toggling off faster so you dont get any overlap, spacing them out a bit, etc...

Oh I still think it looks better, I just thought it might be easier to get it to scroll using whatever you had before (and removing the current topnav)

The worst thing about this site is when you search something you can not sort by date. It makes it really difficult to find anything relevant.

Damn bronamath, looking better erry day
