WSO Reputation

In recent days, there seems to have been a trend of people asking how to get away with lying on job applications. Just from today,

//www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/embelllished-gpa-o… //www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/how-long-do-MBB-keep-past-applications-and-resumes //www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/finding-out-youve-…

If you google "GPA background check" the 1st results are from WSO. (don't click on them if you try it). Similarly for "investment banking background check". The sudden increase in the frequency of these posts seems to be a chain reaction (people google it and find wso and come here to ask how to get away with their bullshit, leading to more google results), and I suggest we stop responding to such posts and/or delete them. I don't think this site would like to be known as a place for cheaters to get advice on lying on their resumes.

Patrick/other mods, if you think the traffic it brings to the site is worth it, feel free to delete this thread.

09gradi think banning threads on certain topics is a slippery slope we shouldn't go down.

You don't know that everyone posting these is a "cheater" - the background check process brings out the paranoia in all of us - and you're free to ignore certain threads at your discretion.

This isn't Beijing Oasis.

I agree with your sentiment, and I do think that the slippery slope argument applies here (unlike in most situations). I have nothing against typical background check questions - I am referring specifically to the ones that are explicitly about lying, usually about GPA. We should not support that in any shape or form on a professional forum.

But you do raise a valid point, and I am certainly not the decision maker - just pointing out the trend to the powers that be.

This is why people come here, for no-bullshit answers to questions they have about Wall Street. Granted, if it's a dumb question, they're going to get shit on. Let em stay.

Honestly, who needs advice on how to change your GPA on your resume? Just open that sucker up with Word and get to it, lol.

No, seriously, those people piss me off.

I'm seeing both sides of this and honestly can't pick.

Ultimately, the survival of this site and its prosperity outweigh philosophical abstractions about censorship: this isn't a political forum, it's an employment forum.

That having been said, these threads aren't focused on helping cheaters, and if someone fails a background check then it doesn't matter what gets said here: they're not getting the job. Such posts are more reflective of the user than the site.

I hope Patrick reads this thread, as only he can make a decision........

We don't need Patrick banning people or thread types, we need more people shitting on stupid questions. That's right, save your monkey shit for the new kids.

They are not philosophical abstractions in the least. There are often legitimate questions one can have about a background check, and I worry about our ability to accurately determine what's appropriate and what's not 100% of the time.

There are not many places one can go on the internet to ask questions about this stuff and - potentially - receive a reasonable answer. Those who've been through b-ground checks know how silly they can be; i've never done drugs in my life, and hell, once I was a bit nervous about the drug test.

I'd rather see 10 worthless threads that go ignored than one legit thread that doesn't get to even be seen.

As another point, I'd also ask people to give an example of where censorship ever turned out to be the right thing to do in the long run.

When the US gov't covered up the fact that Oswald had Cuban support. This would have inflamed the American public beyond reason at an already critical point in time [Cuban Missle Crisis]. The mob was too busy killing each other and doing blow and fucking hookers, the CIA sure as hell didn't [they LOVED Kennedy], the Soviets rejected Oz, and the Stonecutters were busy controlling the British crown and holding the dollar down.

The conspiracy was simple and effective: keep this quiet and let people think WE did it, or there very well may be a nuclear war. At any given point, half of the country supports the gov't vs a potential majority screaming for war and likely getting it? Verdict:

Worth it.
