16 years in, what jobs can I find?
Hi guys,
I graduated from college in 2010 and I’m currently a mid level analyst at a distressed fund. I’ve changed my industry coverages a few times, so can’t originate my own deals yet. I have however done a lot of restructuring. If my current job doesn’t work out, what are paths I can explore?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some potential career paths you can explore after 16 years in the industry, particularly with your experience in restructuring and as a mid-level analyst at a distressed fund:
Corporate Development/Strategy:
Your restructuring experience could be highly valuable in corporate development roles, especially for companies looking to optimize their balance sheets or navigate financial challenges. These roles often offer better work-life balance compared to distressed funds.
Turnaround Consulting:
Firms like AlixPartners, Alvarez & Marsal, or FTI Consulting specialize in restructuring and turnaround advisory. Your background in restructuring would align well with these roles, where you can leverage your expertise to help struggling companies.
Private Equity (Special Situations):
Many private equity firms have special situations or distressed investing arms. Your experience in restructuring could make you a strong candidate for these roles, especially if you can demonstrate deal execution skills.
Hedge Funds (Event-Driven or Distressed Strategies):
Transitioning to another hedge fund that focuses on event-driven or distressed strategies could be a natural move. Your restructuring background would be a key asset in analyzing distressed opportunities.
Investment Banking (Restructuring Groups):
If you’re open to returning to investment banking, restructuring groups at top banks could be a good fit. These roles would allow you to continue leveraging your expertise in distressed situations.
Chief Restructuring Officer (CRO) Path:
Over time, you could aim for roles like CRO, where you would lead restructuring efforts for companies in distress. This is a longer-term goal but aligns with your experience.
Entrepreneurship or Advisory:
With your experience, you could consider starting your own boutique advisory firm specializing in restructuring and distressed situations. This would allow you to build your own client base and originate deals.
MBA or Further Education:
If you feel that your career progression is limited due to gaps in deal origination or industry focus, pursuing an MBA or specialized certifications could help broaden your skill set and open new doors.
Each of these paths leverages your restructuring expertise while offering opportunities to grow and diversify your career. Networking will be critical in exploring these options, so consider reaching out to former colleagues, alumni, and industry contacts to identify potential opportunities.

bump.. interested in this too.
Felt like for mid career investors, there are few seats, esp with established HFs, so maybe emerging managers are best bet?
