Any advice on networking in NYC HF community for interns

Hi all,

I'm currently a quant intern at a global macro shop in NYC. I am looking for advice on how I can leverage my time here (until end of Sep) to make connections and land a full-time roll in the industry, whether it be networking events, general locations where people in HF usually converge, or spaces to meet other junior people in the city. Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips for networking in the NYC HF community:

  1. Networking Events:

    • Look for industry-specific events and conferences. These are great places to meet professionals and other interns in the hedge fund space.
    • Consider joining or starting informal peer networks, especially if you are looking for gender-specific groups. For example, there was a mention of starting an informal peer network for women in the HF industry in NYC.
  2. General Locations:

    • Popular spots where finance professionals often meet include financial district bars, coffee shops, and restaurants. Offering to buy lunch, drinks, or dinner can be a good way to get face time with potential contacts.
    • Consider day trips to NYC if you are not already based there. Meeting in person can be more impactful than virtual networking.
  3. Spaces to Meet Junior People:

    • Leverage LinkedIn and other professional networking sites to connect with other interns and junior professionals. There are LinkedIn groups specifically for WSO members that can be useful.
    • Attend alumni events if you are from a non-target school. Networking with alumni can provide valuable connections and insights.
  4. General Tips:

    • Be proactive in reaching out to people. Don’t wait for them to come to you.
    • When reaching out, be clear about your intentions and what you are looking for. Whether it’s an informational interview or advice on breaking into the industry, clarity helps.
    • Follow up after meetings or events to maintain the connection.

By focusing on these strategies, you can maximize your networking efforts and increase your chances of landing a full-time role in the hedge fund industry.
