Are there any good SM seats left?
See above. Or are the attractive seats MMs these days? The large growth funds are down 30-50% from peak and there are <50 firms across places like TCI and the like that are truly long-term (based on LPs), have differentiated results over a decade +, compensate appropriately, weren’t just levered beta/growth over a decade, and are actually hiring analysts?
Any names/places to focus on. Viking (understand not a true SM with multiple PMs), TCI, etc.?
Lone Pine?
Places NOT down 30-50
Probably the single manager macro guys
No, no point in working for tiger cubs / elite SMs anymore. Maybe large funds with huge capital not down too much with lowkey MM model but definitely not true MM (ie Viking Farallon baupost DK)
Or MF PE instead
How does baupost have an MM model???
answer is they don't
Not really tbh. Handful of SM seats otherwise mostly MM. Not an industry I'd recommend a young person go into anymore.
What would you recommend now?
Why? At a top MBA now with MF PE background, thinking about going to a SM
Why wouldn't you recommend it?
