I'd personally ask the top discretionary managers what they think about systematic, and the top quant managers what they think abt discretionary.

I'll bite - I am assuming you have a chance to talk to someone important and need some ideas for questions to ask:

- What do you think your competitive edge is and do you see it deteriorating over time or is there some durability to it? - this basically opens up questions to carry the entire conversation as you will discuss their investment philosophy, how it has changed or may need to change over time, how markets have evolved, etc.

- If alpha has gotten harder to consistently generate like many say it has, how have you evolved to remain successful?

- What do you think about the trend towards more market neutral funds and what do you think about the prospects for more concentrated funds with higher beta exposure going forward?

- What are some of the most influential books you have read throughout your career?

- What differentiates the most successful PMs and Analysts you have hired or worked with from the rest of the pack? - make sure to focus on differences between both PM and analyst seats as well
