i see it happen quite a bit. if you work closely with a hedge fund and they respect you and think you add value, then most likely they will offer you a spot at the fund. in order to do this though you need to be very good with your product.

If you are domestic vanilla equity sales, chances are not great. I see it happen a lot more on the international side ( Asia, Japan, Emerging Markets), and in equity derivitives. Jimbo can give more insight on what he sees on the fixed income floor.

As far as positions that exist it can range from anything to helping with investment decisions (research analysts, assitant PM's, stuff like that) to hedge fund sales positions which involves marketing the hedge fund to banks, II's and wealth individuals. It really depends. Don't forget, the traders at big hedge funds usually are the low on the totem pole unless they are trading prop. At most big hedge funds, the traders simply execute, all the trade ideas come from research analysts and portfolio managers.
