Bad GPA, HF offer, lost in life, what do i do?
Feeling extremely discouraged after failing (and hving to withdraw) from another class. I feel really lost.
I was doing a difficult double major in humanities +stem but I’ve never done well. Sub 3.0 GPA, lots of B’s and C’s. Yet despite this, through the meritocracy of hedge fund case studies, I have been able to land an internship and secure the return offer at a long/short hedge fund. I know most people would say “who cares you’ve got the job already”, but I can’t help but feel like i could have done better in my academics.
For context, I came to college with significant deficiencies in my education due to being homeschooled. My math skills aren’t proficient even though i can understand it conceptually. I’m already in my senior year and I can’t help but feel like i would have done so much better if I knew what I know now about how to study and had the time to build the foundations.
I’m also starting to enjoy my senior/higher level courses and wish that I had the background and prerequisite knowledge to excel. It sucks to see that I’m only getting this now.
To be fair, i was battling other personal issues during my freshman/sophomore year. Didn’t really get to build good momentum and work habits. It’s starting to bleed into work too, I can tell from my intern experience why the industry prefers to hire the best and brightest — bc both smarts and work ethic are required.
I just feel lost that I didn’t have the opportunity to build myself. I appreciate that I have this offer but I know its difficult to accept that my academic journey could have looked so different.Part of me wishes I could go grad school too.
Anyways, rant over. I guess i’ll just enjoy my last year and go become a long/short monkey.
Kind of silly thing to worry about school now, but I can understand that you feel like you didn’t live up to your own expectations. Or maybe it just irks you that your GPA looks “bad”. Fwiw I don’t remember my own GPA. I remember getting beat up by engineering upper divs despite my best cramming efforts and aceing quantum chem classes I was passionate about.
Anyways I would say this is a great chip on your shoulder to have to motivate you to hit the ground running when you start in the work force. In fact, start now and do well in whatever classes you have left - if you already have the job then you might as well ace school for the love of the game and your own education that you paid tuition for.
